About the Institute

The Institute of Clinical and Molecular Virology is a Department of the Medical Faculty of the Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.

The activities of the Department are concentrated in a basic research program in molecular virology and vaccine development, with emphasis on human herpesviruses and human retroviruses. In addition, they include diagnostic virology for the patients of University clinics and hospitals in Northern Bavaria.

The Department was founded in 1972 by Nobel laureate Prof. Harald zur Hausen and expanded to its present size by Prof. Bernhard Fleckenstein, chairman of the Department from 1978 to January 2015. Since February 2015, the department is headed by Prof. Klaus Überla.

The laboratory building of about 3.000 m2 is located in downtown Erlangen, in mid of the botanical garden of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg and houses around 130 employees.
